{"id":3262,"date":"2017-07-14T12:09:37","date_gmt":"2017-07-14T12:09:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bentpinefarm.org\/?p=3262"},"modified":"2018-07-10T14:35:57","modified_gmt":"2018-07-10T14:35:57","slug":"bent-pine-farm-year-4-first-6-months","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bentpinefarm.org\/?p=3262","title":{"rendered":"Bent Pine Farm Year 4 &#8211; First 6 Months"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s changed in the first half of Year 4?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Food Production &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong>The Food Forest is started. \u00a0We have pears, plums, peaches, apples, blueberries, raspberries, all that common stuff. \u00a0We also added juju berries, paw paws (in addition to the multiple wild paw-paws that are growing on the property), satsuma citrus (like mandarine oranges, cherries &#8211; one dead so far). \u00a0The Chayata squash died. \u00a0The Muscadine Grapes are doing okay. The avocado produces and then loses its fruit. (Bought special organic citrus fertilizer for that.)<\/p>\n<p>We fought with the Monster Bunny for the strawberries &#8211; it was a tie. \u00a0We fought with the rabbits for the sweet potatoes. \u00a0We won thanks to the electric fence!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Livestock &#8211;<\/strong> We bred our four dwarf goats and got 8 kids, which all sold through Craigslist.<\/p>\n<p>Cheerio, the American Guinea Hog, had 6 piglets that she promptly killed. \u00a0We culled the female and started over with Sweetie, who should have piglets in Aug (&#8217;17) and Rachel. \u00a0The hogs \u00a0eat primarily rice and potatoes and raw eggs, with other food scraps added.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FhctFxLbYEI\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Our two <strong>Resident Interns<\/strong> moved to Stage Two of the Independent Living Program. \u00a0They are both working off-campus for now until we establish the fam-events program (Spring &#8217;18).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Construction<\/strong> work is at that &#8216;once-in-awhile-as needed&#8217; stage. \u00a0We built a Basic Platform for the new Air Conditioning Unit at the Tilly. \u00a0And put up the Shade tent on the rear porch of the Main House.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oak &amp; Acorn<\/strong> &#8211; Basic remod done to the hall in the Main House. \u00a0We anticipate an inter-generational change in the fall as we gain a new elder resident. \u00a0That puts four generations on the Farm!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Storytelling<\/strong> is off to a great start with the first book in the\u00a0<em>Coop &amp; Mattie Mystery Series: &#8216;Diamond Mine&#8217; \u00a0<\/em>and two stories for Lily&#8217;s<em> Animal Tales Collection. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Happy Homesteading,<br \/>\nT.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1147\" src=\"https:\/\/bentpinefarm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/featherPen-1.jpeg\" alt=\"blog post\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bentpinefarm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/featherPen-1.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/bentpinefarm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/featherPen-1-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/bentpinefarm.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/featherPen-1-100x100.jpeg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; What&#8217;s changed in the first half of Year 4?
