Aug 2016 – We weren’t sure we had a handle on sexing the Tilapia. There were a few fry in the main Tilapia pool last week, but nothing in the breeding pool where they were supposed to be. Then…
So apparently we succeeded in finding at least one pair for the breeding pool!
The Tilapia pool has its ups and downs. The food turns the water a very murky brown and you can only trust that the fish are still in there. Completely changing the water appears to be the key… not practical. Today it’s clear again because we changed the water almost 100%. Any suggestions as to how we can keep our fish more visible?
Oct 2015
Late October we started to lose two or three fish a day. The ammonia levels were way too high. Got some bio-bacteria balls to eat the ammonia…seems to work. Put in a 50 gallon drum filter with graduated size rock layers. Now the water is clear and we can actually see the tilapia!

A couple of the males are starting to stake out some territory for attracting the females..swimming in circles to keep everyone else away. Need to get these guys into their own tank.
