Our soil building is humming along at the top of the hill, with help from the Rooster Duo in the Chicken Tractor One . We have planted all our own cow peas from last season, and will have to purchase enough to finish the rest.

Soil building continues at Bent Pine Farm. The chicken tractor moves the two roosters around the hilltop garden area, and they are doing a fine job loosening the weeds and nibbling bugs.
The rows get built up with manure from the chicken and rabbit pens and compost. Finally the top of each row is dressed with wood mulch and planted with summer cover crops. The cover crop this summer is cow peas, with seeds that we saved from last year’s crop. They come up in two days and add nitrogen to the soil for the next crop.

Today we began again with summer cover crops, planting 3 rows of black-eyed peas. When we are ready to plant veggies in the fall we will cut the plants at the base and use the cut plants for mulch in the paths.
More planting cover crops tomorrow…
