Hibiscus for Sorrel – Sept 2015

Our hibiscus bushes are getting big and starting to bloom.  One had too much wind in a recent thunderstorm and broke off right at the base! Link to Post.  Fortunately, we have about six others in the orchard.  Sorrel is made from steeping hibiscus blossoms and then draining the tisane and chilling.  Very refreshing and good for you.

Homemade Bug Repellent

IMG_1509

Every couple of weeks we need to replenish the organic bug repellent. Here’s the recipe…super easy!

Fill container (about 4oz. Flaxseed Oil). Add 20 drops each of essential oils:

  • Lemon Eucalyptus
  • Peppermint
  • Lavender

Shake well. Apply every couple of hours. Good stuff!

    Happy Homesteading,

Making Kombucha – Aug 2015

IMG_0034 Kombucha is a tea based organic drink that can be flavored with organic fruit concentrate (we like Black Cherry). The starter ferments for about 9 days, then is added to the bottles with the flavor concentrate and stored in the dark for 24 hours. It develops a nice fizz. Refrigerate and the drink will keep for up to two months (although it never lasts that long!)
