We eat a lot of strawberries in our Kefir Smoothies. (video)
Planted the first batch (Radiance) after they had been stored in the egg fridge for a month because they were shipped to us too soon. (see post) Planted the second batch the day after they arrived…no leaves, but that shouldn’t make any difference. Sweet Charlies are Florida grown plants, should do well. Nothing. (see post).
So, here it is end of Oct and we are replanting the strawberries…’Radiance’ again. Third time’s a charm(?)

Here’s what happened. We ordered 100 strawberry plants in Aug that we intended to be delivered at the end of Sept. …cool weather crop… However, the strawberries were delivered in Aug! We stored them in the egg fridge until a week ago, then planted them in the Hilltop Garden. No luck. Not a single one grew!
We ordered again and planted them again this week. Expensive strawberries this year! You live and learn.
We’re starting the strawberries. Last year we grew the Festival berries and weren’t that happy with them. They characteristically do not ripen all the way to the top.
This year we decided to go with the tried and true Florida strawberry “Sweet Charlie”. The beds were gone over by the chickens first. (see the post about Chicken Tractor One). Then we spread goat manure and black weed cloth.
We have three rows ready for strawberries in the Hilltop Garden.
