Soapmaking 101 … Disaster!!

Well, we’ve successfully made soap using the cold process several times. The problem is you have to wait to let it cure. And we usually run out before we get more made. So this time we tried hot process…

Got all the way to the end and the mixture turned into a horrible lumpy mess. We could have used it last week on Halloween to scare people! “Don’t give up on hot process now. Get right back on that horse!” says my conscience.

So far so good…

and then… disaster

Now come on…don’t laugh!

Our friend Melinda makes goat milk soap, and she’s really good at it. Check out her website.    I’ll have to get her to tell us what we did wrong!   Melinda, Help!

Machine Milking Goats

At about 6 weeks, kids have been weaned from Mom’s milk and are grazing and eating hay and supplemental grain on their own. At that point the milking can begin. If you have enough goats a milking machine is a good investment. Here’s what the process looks like when you use a machine.

You can keep up the milking for several months as the goats rest between kidding. At the point when they have been bred again, the milk will stop.
