Greenhouse Spring 2017

High today was 75 Tonight’s low will be 58. We’re probably out of the woods on freezing temps.

The Greenhouse and hoop house are filling with seedling and cuttings of Tomatoes, thyme, spinach, sweet potatoes, cukes, casava.

Barley fodder is under production and everyone loves that except the goats!

Amazon Lily and the Orchids

The Amazon Lily is beautiful this year. It really has its toes pinched and needs to be split and repotted. The blooms are gorgeous because of the cramped quarters. A few nights during the winter season, the orchids have to be moved to the greenhouse, but generally they are out in the Shade Garden.

My Mom gave me the first Amazon Lily bulb many years ago. She was a Master Gardener and had lovely gardens wherever she lived. (Visit the Grace Potter page in the TLC Genealogy Project.)

Easy Greenhouse DIY – From a Kit

This is the 10′ x 12′ greenhouse kit that we got from ‘Harbor Freight’. Started all the spinach, broccoli, and herbs inside last winter (2015) and planted out in March. Unfortunately, the Summer heat slammed in right after that…so we lost the spinach and the Chinese Cabbage and lettuce bolted.

We added water inside and out and a potting bench and sink at the back outside.

Summer 2017 After the greenhouse had sat through a Florida summer the panels had deteriorated so badly that when we got our annual hurricane storms, many of them crumbled and blew off. We replaced them (Winter 2016) with higher quality poly-carbonite panels. We’re headed into Summer 2017 now, so we will see if they withstand the weather any better.

This is an ok greenhouse kit for the money, if you want something that is easy and fast to put up. Perhaps you are beyond the point where you can build something from scratch (or want to!), like us. It’s a good alternative, if you wait until it goes on sale.

Happy Homesteading
